In the past, clothing was only allowed to be worn by a very select few in the world, but over time, it has been stripped of its status without any ill intent. Since clothing has no personality, the people, systems, and countries that controlled it fade away, and so does the meaning that was originally attached to it.
A recent example that is easy to understand is the Napoleon jacket for Dior homme designed by Hedi Slimane in SS2006. While retaining the decorative details of the original, the body of the jacket is reminiscent of the 1970s Adidas track jacket. The stand-up collar and sleeve switching that are the origins of the Napoleon jacket have been dutifully converted, and the jacket has successfully modernized/hacked the image of the crimson Napoleon jacket that Michael Jackson has favored since 1984.
To be honest, it would be too much to expect everyone involved in the fashion industry to be as creative as him. However, as the components flow downstream, only the more superficial details remain and their original meaning becomes meaningless. The problems in this industrial structure seem to have improved a little by major SPA brands inviting guest designers and setting up collaboration lines. However, it is important to note that while large companies are tightening governance, the number of small, disorganized brands is increasing.
I would like to continue observing where this design came from, how it was interpreted before being made into a product, and whether it actually had any significance.
